Get Back To Nature With Foggy Bottom Canoe

By Janine Hughes

City life can quickly take its toll. To ease the stress, you need regular escapes into the wilderness, where things are calm and peaceful and the air is fresh and clean. Foggy Bottom Canoe offers the perfect way to get back to nature, only a stone's throw from Nashville's lights.

The business is one of several that cater to visitors to the Kingston Springs area. This town, with no more than three thousand inhabitants, is only about thirty minutes from Nashville. It's a slice of Tennessee paradise in Cheatham County, located on the banks of the beautiful Harpeth River.

In town, Kingston Springs City Park is a great place to spend a summer's day. This park is one of several in the area and lies on the banks of the river. There are trails to hike and a historic bridge to explore. Otherwise, simply play a game of softball on the lawns, make use of the picnic facilities and cool off in the river. If you need an adrenalin rush, there's a zipline adventure course only a short drive from town.

The real reason to come to the Kingston Springs area is the Harpeth River. Apart from the opportunities for swimming and fishing, this river offers excellent canoeing, whether you're a beginner or an expert. The river slowly meanders along so that a new adventure always awaits around the next bend. Foggy Bottom is one of the more popular canoe rental businesses in the area, offering tours of the river as well.

A highlight for many visitors to the area is the Narrows of the Harpeth. This area is located where two horseshoe bends in the river almost meet. Here you'll find the historic Montgomery Bell Tunnel, which cuts through almost 300 feet of limestone rock. Built in 1819, it was one of the USA's first water diversion tunnels. If you're interested in archaeology, you may also want to explore Mound Bottom, a Native American complex which dates from the Middle Ages.

A good journey is made great when you've packed the right stuff. For your canoe trip, you'll need a bathing suit, plenty of sunscreen, some water and something to snack on. A hat and insect repellent will be good additions too. If you're going to hike along one of the many trails along the river, it's essential to have good walking shoes as well.

The local climate is pleasantly warm and you can visit at any time of year. Even in winter there are plenty of mild days. However, it can be wet and uncomfortably humid. The end of summer and the beginning of fall are great times to visit, since these are the driest times of the year. Moreover, temperatures are still high enough to really enjoy a dip in the river.

Because the area is so close to Nashville, it's a good option for a day trip. However, there is a good selection of restaurants and accommodation for different budgets here too. This is ideal if you've had an exciting day out on the water and can't stomach the drive back to the city just yet. However, it's advisable to book ahead, especially when you visit around public holidays.
