Endless Fun Things To Do In California

By Shawn Hunter

California is on almost everyone's bucket list. Finding fun things to do in California is not the issue; it's trying to narrow the choices down to a manageable level. Whether you're an outdoors person or a lover of city lights, the Golden State has unforgettable sights and adventures waiting. This, the nation's third largest but most populous state, has something for every age and every interest.

The Golden State is known all over the world for certain famous names and places. Hollywood, the Big Sur, Los Angeles, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Disneyland ring bells in almost every culture, and all of these are tops on the visitors' favorite places list. Shopaholics may want to walk down Rodeo Drive, while teenagers might want to visit one of the innumerable beaches for a taste of the surfer culture. Other 'must see' spots include the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma, the strawberry fields of Oxnard, and Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco.

Want the great outdoors? Yosemite National Park is true wilderness, complete with wildlife of every description. Whitewater ranges from beginner level to Class V rapids on the Salmon or the Scott. Giant sequoias grow to 350 feet and are big enough around to live in. Rare birds live on the coast, in the mountain forests, and in tidal marshes.

The infinite variety of California includes the nation's highest point at the top of Mt. Whitney and its lowest in Death Valley. Hikers could spend a lifetime and not see all the natural wonders. There are marshes with rare birds, forests with towering sequoias, the wilderness of Yosemite with almost every animal you can imagine, and world-class surf off Oxnard and many other beach cities. Even the sunsets are unforgettable seen from a Pacific coast clifftop.

The famous cities attract people like magnets. San Francisco is considered by many to be the world's most fascinating city, with its hills, unique architecture, and trolley cars. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the state's top ten tourist favorites. Dining, shopping, and exploring the city can fill an entire vacation.

People love seeing the homes of the rich and famous in Palm Springs, or strolling through the stars' neighborhoods hoping to get a glimpse of them walking by. Mount Lee overlooks Hollywood; it's the site of the famous, huge, white letters that spell out the name of the city. Los Angeles has the Walk of Fame, where important people hope to get their own bronze star. Plan a tour of a movie studio or a ride on a cable car in San Diego.

Although most people think of movie stars and beaches when they think of the Golden State, the state's largest industry is agriculture. There are miles of citrus groves, vineyards, strawberry fields, truck gardens, and orchards. A tour of Northern California shows visitors just how big and varied this great state really is.

Visit historic missions, fabulous art museums, beautiful municipal buildings, and sites that figured large in the state's history. Relax at a five-star resort. Learn about the wildlife of the coast's marshes and forests. Eat fabulous seafood. No matter what a vacation means to you, you will find it in sunny California.
