St Maarten Is An Interesting Place To Go On A Vacation

By Claudine Hodges

Visiting a nice holiday destination always pays off. St Maarten is a place where one should try and escape too at least once in their lives. It is a tropical island in the Caribbean just a few miles east of Puerto Rico. One will find duty free shopping with vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches.

The Simpson Bag Lagoon is home to many different yachts that are anchored in sheltered waters or luxury marinas. It is known as the world's most outrageous home for mega yachts. If one is into sailing, a yacht can be chartered for a few days or even if one prefers catamarans, fishing boats or Boston Whalers these are available either with or without a crew and captain.

The airport started in 1942 as an armed forces strip and in 1943 was changed into a national one. In 1964 it was relocated and remodeled with a new control tower and terminal building. The last time it was upgraded was in 2001. Due to the high traffic and expected growth the Princess Julian Airport has been modernized with a three phased master plan.

All boats entering do so by going through two moving bridges, one from the French side and the other from the Dutch. Once these bridges are moving all traffic will come to a stand still for about ten minutes. From Mondays to Saturdays they are raised three times a day at set intervals and on Sundays only twice a day.

During ones stay there will be an opportunity to kite surf. Lessons will be given by experienced instructors where they will show one how to lift and steer as well as to body drag. Once given the all clear standing on the board with the wind taking you away one can feel totally free. As each lesson is personalized to give undivided attention they are limited to two people at a time.

This island is of a tropical monsoon climate that tends to have a dry season from January through to April. The rainy seasons are from August to December. The temperature does remain fairly consistent during the year ranging from 20 degrees Celsius to 34 degrees Celsius. They do have the occasional thunder storms but these rarely exceed eighteen days throughout the year.

Great Bay is one of the widest and longest beaches. There are many different places where one can get something to eat as well many different shops that sell jewellery, electronics and of course clothing. There are also a variety of different water sports to try which include jet skiing, para-sailing as well as diving and different boat tours.

Happy Bay beach on the French side of the island is fairly empty. There are no restaurants but plenty of palm trees, sea and sand. This beach is for those that prefer to be where nature takes over but it is advisable to leave before dark as there is no help if an accident happens once the sun sets.
